Committee : Safety

Subject: Boating Safety Class

Contact Tom Bohn at 618-692-6461

The Dunlap lake safety committee has arranged with the St. Louis Sail & Power Squadron to offer a boating safety course locally for Dunlap Lake residents.  The course will consist of 10 hours of instructions by a Power Squadron instructor plus a review and exam for those wishing to obtain course certification and an Illinois boating license (required for youths between 12 and 18 to legally operate any powered boat on Dunlap Lake).

Registration cost includes the text book on boating and boating safety, a CD with supporting information and illustrations, and all other course material.  The course cost for advance registration is $35.00 per person or $50.00 for two people but the 2 person rate includes only one text book & CD for the pair.  Registration is limited to thirty people, but if there are any openings after January 30th the cost goes up $5.00 per person.  We expect the course to be filled long before then.

Classes will meet Saturdays February 13th and 20th from 12:00 to 5:00 on the N.O. Nelson campus of Lewis & Clark Community College, Edwardsville.  The review and exam will be held the following Saturday starting at 12:00 at the same location.

Christmas is coming, this would make a nice gift for that teenager who wants to take the family boat out by themselves and you would feel better about it if they had the training and were doing it legally.  This is not a “kid’s course”; all new boaters will find it informative and useful.  It is also an excellent course for those who have been boating for a while and may have forgotten or never learned some basic boating skills.

For additional information including registration form e-mail Safety@dunlaplake.org or call: Tom Bohn at 692-6461 or Jenny Russi at 656-6652.

Subject: Fish Shocking

Date Posted: May 8, 2009

IDNR – Fred Cronin – Dist. 16 Fisheries Biologist

Fred will be shocking Dunlap Lake sometime on June.  This will help us understand what is needed for the growth and balance of our fish in the lake.  He will then make suggestions for stockings off this data.  Although, I feel our lake is in excellent shape, it will help improve our fishery.

Subject: January Financial Report

Date Posted: February 11, 2009

The Treasurer’s January financial report has been posted on the website. It can be found by going to the “DOCUMENTS & RECORDS” page and clicking on “Archive of Financial Records” in the “YOUR BOARD” box. Anyone with questions should contact Tom Bohn, Treasurer, at Tom@dunlaplake.org. (Treasurer)

Committee : Silt

Subject: Dock and Shoreline Maintenance
Date Posted: November 25, 2008

The lake is being lowered to assist the city in the repair and opening of E. Lake Drive. See November 6th announcement for details. While the lake is down it would be a good idea for all residents with docks to have them inspected and perform any necessary repairs. It is the responsibility of all dock owners to assure docks are maintained in a “safe and attractive” condition. Owners are subject to fines if they are not. Many docks in disrepair have been reported to the Board recently. This is also an excellent opportunity to inspect and repair any damaged shoreline seawalls or silt retaining walls. (WEBMASTER)

Committee : Silt

Subject: Silt Retention System
Date Posted: November 25, 2008

The Board’s Silt & Erosion Committee is studying what can be done while the lake is lowered to reduce the problem of new silt entering the lake at the south end. They hope to be able to take advantage of the lake being down, and work in conjunction with the city’s road repair project to develop a silt retentions facility at what is now the major source of new silt entering the lake. We hope to have more detailed information on what can be done in the near future. (WEBMASTER)

Subject: Restriction Changes
Date Posted: November 25, 2008

The final count on the vote regarding the changes to the restrictions is not complete but preliminary numbers indicate both issues are passing with good margins. We had about 60% of the eligible voters returning ballots, which is very good for this type of election. The Board would like to thank all that participated. There were some problems with the printer mixing up the mailing list for the newsletter and the ballots which are currently being addressed, but the potential changes are not expected to alter the results. When the count is official, we will post the numbers here. Keep tuned for future announcements. (WEBMASTER)

Subject: Lake Being Lowered
Date Posted: November 6, 2008

The DLPOA Board will be lowering the lake in order to assist the city with the repair of East Lake Drive and to enable the repair of the bracket on the drain pipe near the dam. We are planning to drop the lake a total of 5 to 6 feet beginning on November 26. It is expected to take between 10 days and 2 weeks to achieve the 5 to 6 foot reduction. Repair of East Lake Drive is expected to begin in early December and the street is expected reopen before Christmas. If you want to take your boat out, please contact Carolyn Green at 659-0257 or a Board member for the combination to the lock on the boat ramp. (Al Ortbals, DLPOA Board President)
