Lake water quality tested

A second round of lake water testing was performed in mid-September. The detected levels of nitrates, metals, and fecal coliform were all lower than the levels detected in the samples collected in July. The phosphate levels (related to fertilizer runoff, which contributes to the algae outbreaks) were about the same, but since the temperatures have dropped and the rain has increased we haven’t seen any algae problems like we did this summer. All of the detected levels were below the Illinois water quality standards.

Common Area Committee conducting census of common area docks

While docks on common areas have grown over the years, records have not been well maintained. Many docks have been transferred to new owners. Others have been abandoned. To better maintain, utilize and regulate our common areas, the Commons Committee is compiling a census of docks and boats located in common areas. If you own a dock or keep a boat in a common area, please contact committee chairman Mike Dawson with your name, address, common area, dock location and Dunlap Lake boat sticker number, phone number and e-mail address. Your contact information is necessary so we can contact you regarding common area clean up days and maintenance projects.

Later this month, the committee will be trimming trees and removing fallen branches from common areas. If you have opinions regarding common areas or would like to volunteer to help out, contact Mike Dawson.

Mike can be reached at dafoe-dawson@sbcglobal.net or 692-1998.

Golf Tournament raises money for fireworks fund

The third annual Dunlap Lake golf tournament was held on Saturday, October 6 at the Oak Brook Golf Club. Ten teams of four competed in the 9-hole, scramble tournament. Mark Hick’s team took first. Tom Richey’s team was second. And Al Ortbal’s team came in third. Kim Simmering won the closest to the hole competition for women and Mark Hicks was closest among the men.

As in previous years, net proceeds go to boost the July 4th Dunlap Lake fireworks display. This year, nearly $800 was generated which will boost the fireworks budget to nearly $6,000 for 2013. Thanks to Tom Richey for organizing the tournament, all those who helped to put it on, and all the golfers whose participation benefits all Dunlap residents.

Lake being stocked again

The lake will be stocked again this fall. We’ll be stocking hybrid striped bass in an effort to keep the bait fish population in check.

Dam inspection completed

The annual inspection of the dam was conducted this year by the engineering firm of Hurst-Roche. Minor repairs and maintenance items were recommended and will be carried out by the Dam Maintenance Committee. The Board has also been working with the city to update our emergency action plan. The plan is required as part of our state permit. The last plan was done in 1990. We expect to complete the plan and submit it to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources later this year.

Property to be put up for sale

Earlier this year, the DLPOA Board moved to foreclose on a property after multiple years of lack of payment of the annual assessments. The property is a large, flat, vacant lot at the end of Branch St. off of East Lake Drive. Pursuant to court order, the parcel is now the property of the Association. The intent is to put it up for sale so the Association can recover the back assessments and the expenses incurred in the foreclosure process. If you have an interest in acquiring the lot, contact Board President Al Ortbals at the phone number or e-mail address shown below.

Boat stickers required

All boats on Dunlap Lake require boat stickers issued by the Association and must be owned and titled by a Dunlap Lake property owner. If you have any questions or need an application for new boat stickers, check the Dunlap Lake website at www.dunlaplake.org/FORMS/boat stickers.html; e-mail Carolyn at carolyn@dunlaplake.org; or call Carolyn at 791-1398.

For those of you who are planning to take your boat out for service or storage for the winter, the gate on the boat ramp should be open. If not, you can get the combination from a Board member. However, you should be prepared to give your boat sticker number in order to get it.

Special thanks for golf tournament supporters

The results are in! On October 6 there were 9 teams competing at Oak Brook Golf Course and together they raised $772 for the 2013 fireworks display. Special thanks goes to golf tournament supporters Oak Brook Golf Course, Cope Marine and Nameoki Marine for prizes, Dixon Golf – sponsor, and Deborah Gail Hicks and Martha Richey for providing dessert.
