While a hard freeze with the water is down might help clean out some of the unwanted plant life, weeding and raking while the water is down can be an option too. Check out these links to learn more about the aquatic plants in our lake.

The best plant we have:

  • Southern naiad – the favored food for fish and ducks (grass carp unfortunately eat this first before starting on problem plants).

The stuff you probably don’t like:

  • Coontail – turns the water into a nasty mess that interferes with fish habitats and limits boating.
  • Filamentous algae – The surface scum that gets bad when there is too much phosphorus (lawn chemicals or fertilizer) in the water.
  • Creeping water primrose – bright yellow flowers with runners that can go up to 16 feet up the shore.
