Building Permits

Building a House or making improvements?

  • The City of Edwardsville asks that all homes around the lake be built at an elevation of at least 521.7 feet (above sea level).
  • All construction must follow the current association covenants which are available at https://www.dunlaplake.org/revised-convenants-and-restrictions/
  • You must submit a building permit application with drawings and a site plan that shows distance from all property lines. Elevations are required if building a house or an addition.

Building a Boat Dock

  • On-Lake – also attach a site plan of where you intend to put the dock with the number of feet from each property line and how it will be anchored.
    • An aerial site map of your property is available on the County website. https://gis.co.madison.il.us/madco/viewer/index.html (You do not need to use the yellow menu on the left, just type your address in the top left corner of the map and then choose “Basemap 2019 Aerial” from the top right corner of the map).
  • Off-lake – spaces on commons area are assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis after a building application has been received at the e-mail address above.
    • Once you are assigned a dock location, the building committee will need drawings of how the dock will be anchored.
    • If you don’t complete the building submission process within 30 days the spot may be given to the next applicant.
    • The commons committee does everything they can to assign spaces as close to your home as possible. If you don’t like the dock location assigned, you can ask to be put on a waiting list in case there is ever an opening closer to your home.

Residents have a year from the time the building permit is issued to build the dock. Permits may be reissued if there is not someone else waiting for the space.

Important: Engineered floating docks are recommended. Removable spuds may be used to anchor a floating dock but no concrete is allowed in the water at any time for any reason.

BUILDING PERMITS ARE REQUIRED TO BUILD ON YOUR PROPERTY AND ON COMMON AREAS.
