Fall Social
Fall is in the air and the Dunlap Lake Association Fall Social will be at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, in the lot across from 121 W. Lake Drive. Come for the Hot Dogs, Bonfire, Marshmallows, S’mores and More. Bring your chairs, beverages, snacks to share, and your favorite stories of good times enjoyed on the lake.
Jim and Susan Seubert will have their Halloween decorations set up in and outside their home, across the street at 113 West Lake Drive for those that would like to come see and get in the Halloween spirit. Hot Dogs and Buns will be provided.
Everyone is welcome, however please RSVP and let us know what you are bringing by email to jim.seubert@yahoo.com or carolyn@dunlaplake.org by Friday, Oct 19. (A few suggestions on what to bring are Apple Cider-hot and cold, Hot Chocolate, Graham Crackers, Chocolate Bars, Marshmellows, Chili, etc.)

The next DLPOA Board meeting will be Oct. 29 at the Fogle House, 840 East Lake Dr. The Board meetings are held at 7 p.m. on Mondays. All property owners are welcome to attend.

Lake Algae
We’ve seen a lot more algae this year than in years past, most likely due to the early spring/summer, recent high temperatures and lack of rain. The filamentous algae or pond scum (thicker, fibrous algae mats) is not harmful, just a nuisance. We’ll probably see various cycles of growth and decay throughout the summer. It can be dealt with by raking it to the shoreline, if possible, or just leaving it alone. Chemical application is costly and can cause other problems like depleted oxygen levels and fish kills, so we don’t plan on doing that right now. It seems like more boat traffic helps break that stuff up, so plenty of evening cruises are encouraged!
The blue green algae some of you might have seen is a little different. This stuff is bright aquamarine and kind of looks like paint floating on the water. It tends to accumulate in the backs of coves. It often comes up during extreme high temperatures like we saw in late June and throughout July. It seems to have a short life cycle, and will start to turn white and decay as it’s going away. Some strains can be toxic to humans (skin and respiratory irritations) and pets (acute hepatic failure). While we don’t know if any of the blue-green algae blooms around the lake are of the toxic variety, you should be on the safe side. Avoid them and keep your pets away from them. The lake was tested this summer for fecal coliform, nitrates, phosphates and lead. All levels were well within normal ranges.
Kids Fishing Tournament
The 2012 Kids Fishing Derby was held on June 9. We had a light turnout this year but everyone had a great time and a lot of fish were caught. Jordan Crow (age 12) walked away with his division and the overall tournament when he weighed in a 10 lb. 4 oz. stringer, which included a 9 lb. 6 oz. catfish! Nice going, Jordan! The catfish was the biggest fish of the tournament. Atticus Arth (age 6) brought in 6 lbs. 6 oz. of panfish to win the youngsters division, and Kaitlyn Gray (age 13) weighed in two catfish totaling 2 lbs. 12 oz. to beat all the boys in the older kids division. Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to everyone for coming out. Full winner standings are below and pictures are posted to the Dunlap Lake Facebook page. A big thanks to Judy and Russ Budzileni for handling the cooking and to Carolyn Green for all her help with getting things ready.

Adult Fishing Tournament Winners
The adult fishing tournament was held on Saturday, May 12. It was a largemouth bass tournament and anglers weighed in their top three fish over 14 inches in length. The top team was Chip and Clint Brune with 10 pounds of fish. They also took the biggest bass prize at 4 pounds, 11 oz. Close behind were Eric and Jarrod Kolesa who weighed in 9 pounds, 6 oz. of bass for second place. And third place went to Chad Martens and Steve Guoy with a total catch of 7 pounds, 6 oz.
DLPOA kicks off summer with boat parade and luau
More than 20 boats came out for the first ever Luau/Patriotic Boat Parade. The judging was very difficult with residents going all out in decorating their boats. The winners were Mike Dawson, Maureen Dafoe-Dawson and Mike and Cheri Mossella. The boat parade started at the Barnett boat ramp and made a lap around the lake. Residents around the lake enjoyed watching all the decorated boats pass by.
Our first ever Dunlap Lake Association Luau was held on Saturday, May 26. Jim Seubert, Social committee chair and his wife, Susan hosted more than 150 residents and guests on their lakeside lot. Pulled pork and kabobs were provided by the association while plenty of side dishes were supplied to all those attending. Everyone enjoyed the warm temperatures and bright sunshine while music was provided by Jim Hursey Sounds Unlimited. A professional magic show was a part of
the program and the event closed with an amazing fire performance by the lakeside that was enjoyed by all.
Many residents and board members helped out with the planning, organizing, setup and takedown of all the decorations.
The boat parade and luau were a huge success! Plans are underway to have our 2nd ever Dunlap Lake Association Luau next year on Saturday, May 25 of Memorial Day weekend.
Second phase of East Lake Drive reconstruction project to begin
On July 17 the City Council awarded the contract for the second phase of the East Lake Dr. reconstruction project to Kilian Corp. of Mascoutah, IL. Work is expected to begin on July 30 and is projected to take just 60 days to complete.
Phase II will extend the new pavement from its current terminus at Glik Park north to Branch St. The street will be closed to thru traffic during construction.
